Director-General denounces killing of journalists Frantzsen Charles and Tayson Latigue in Haiti

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has condemned the killing of two online reporters, Frantzsen Charles and Tayson Latigue in Haiti on 11 September.

I condemn the murder of Frantzsen Charles and Tayson Latigue. I call on the authorities to investigate this attack on press freedom and bring its perpetrators to justice. The safety of all media workers is of paramount importance, including those operating online.

Charles and Latigue, reporters for online media outlets FS News and Tijèn Journalis, respectively, were shot dead while reporting on gang violence in Cité Soleil, in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. They were among seven reporters to come under attack, five of whom were able to escape.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
