UNESCO Cup: scoring a goal against discrimination

Legendary players of Juventus and Real Madrid went head-to-head in the first-ever UNESCO Cup in Turin on Monday evening.

All proceeds from the match will go toward the support of child soldiers affected by conflicts in Mali and the Central African Republic, and also fund a global research program on the problem of racism and discrimination in sports.

Both sides wowed audiences in a face-off that lived up to its blockbuster billing. The game really got going in the second half, with an outstanding volley by Clarence Seedorf. In the end, Real Madrid claimed a 5-1 victory against Juventus.

For Juventus Legend Gianluca Pessotto, “The result that counts tonight is the one off the pitch. The crowd was exceptional, and we’re proud to carry out these kinds of projects with UNESCO. We hope they continue with even greater success.” 

At the final whistle, Eric Falt, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for External Relations and Public Information, spoke of the important role football has to play in spreading inclusive social values, before handing the trophy to Real Madrid captain Fernando Hierro.

Together, UNESCO and Juventus will continue efforts to break down social barriers in and through sports. An essential form of human expression, sports can  strengthen societies as a whole. Through its power to bring people of different cultures together around shared values, sports can help craft a better and more peaceful future for all.
