Professor Joseph Wong will headline the conversation, exploring the theme of Equity and Inclusive Development in the Era of Post-Welfare Statism.

The Thought Leader: Professor Joseph Wang

  • Joseph Wong is Vice-President, International, University of Toronto, where he is also a Professor of Political Science. He held the Canada Research Chair in Health, Democracy, and Development for two terms from 2006 to 2016, and the Roz and Ralph Halbert Professor of Innovation at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy from 2013 to 2023. He was selected to be a Pierre Elliot Trudeau Foundation mentor and fellow in 2023. With a wealth of academic contributions including books Healthy Democracies and Betting on Biotech, Professor Wong's research has been published in esteemed journals such as The Lancet and Comparative Political Studies. Inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals, Professor Wong founded the Reach Alliance.

The discussant: Mr Bruno Tardieu

  • Bruno Tardieu has been a Permanent Volunteer at ATD Fourth World since 1981. He has served as head of ATD Fourth World/USA. During these years, he was a visiting scholar at the Harvard Center for European Studies, he also taught at the MIT Urban Studies and Planning Department and was for ten years on the Board of the Department's Center for Reflective Community Practice. 
    From 2014 to 2022, he served as the Director of the Joseph Wresinski Archives and Research Centre, following his role as National Delegate for France, where he facilitated the global network of ATD Fourth World allies. Prior to that, he developed street computing initiatives in New York ghettos. He has conducted several studies on poverty and education, discrimination based on poverty, and the alliance between the poorest individuals and democratic institutions.

    Bruno Tardieu has also authored numerous books and articles. His latest publication is Pour une nouvelle philosophie sociale Transformer la société à partir des plus pauvrest(Towards a New Social Philosophy: Transforming Society from the Perspective of the Poorest , Ed. Bord de l'Eau, 2023).

About this Initiative 

The Thought Leaders Series, aims to provide a platform for leading minds in the social and human sciences to share their reflections on critical societal challenges and innovative ideas on overcoming them.

This series of inspiring talks will help us rethink and reframe our efforts to build a more equitable and inclusive world where people lead fulfilling lives. To enrich the discourse and provide multifaceted perspectives, each session will feature a discussant. The discussant serves as a complementary voice, offering thoughtful reflections and engaging in a dialogue that deepens our understanding of the presented ideas. 

Future speakers will include prominent scientists, artists, philosophers, climate activists, academics, writers, policymakers and practitioners. The audience would comprise of UNESCO staff and permanent delegations, invited guests, and the public.
