随着时间的推移，环境问题的紧迫性变得更加清晰：我们只有一个地球，而且它正处于危险之中。为了解决这些问题，我们需要彻底反思人类与自然以及与其他生物的关系——我们需要设计和创造一个真正的共享世界。
生物圈保护区表明，我们有可能在享有这个世界的同时，也与自然建立起可持续的和谐关系。
生物圈保护区国际日是一个邀请，让我们从这些保护区已经实施的解决方案中获得灵感，在各地建立真正的可持续发展，充分尊重自然和生物世界。该国际日由教科文组织大会第四十一届会议宣布设立（2021年，41 C/37）。
